This is inevitable, and I believe not only for 2023, but this trend will also continue for a longer time. As the cloud becomes the strategic platform for workload across multiple industries, we need a multidisciplinary workforce to manage, maintain, secure and monitor the infrastructure in order to keep the infrastructure resilient, secure, scalable and healthy.

As the complexity of modern applications and software increases, we need a cross-functional practice weaponised with automation, AI, policies, practices and tools to bring agility for services, continuous resilience, consistent governance and overall standard practice. Platform engineering is that powerful cross-functional practice which enables resiliency, governance, scalability, and productivity of the platform by enforcing practices and policies.

In my book, Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure and Operations Explained: Accelerate your application migration and modernization journey on the cloud with IBM and Red Hat, I have explained Platform engineering should be an everyday activity to manage the platform’s health. At the same time, automation, standard architecture patterns for platform components, financial management operations and cultural practice (FinOPs), and capacity management can improve performance and reduce the time to market. Here is the end-to-end ecosystem for platform engineering in the case of modernization in the cloud.

Ecosystem for Platform Engineering

Maybe we all have come across the following meme, which is true if the cost for any cloud platform is not continuously monitored and optimized using rules and policies. At the same time, an integrated culture for cost optimization needs to be established across people, processes and practices.

In my book Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure and Operations Explained: Accelerate your application migration and modernization journey on the cloud with IBM and Red Hat, I have explained the reference architecture for FinOps as shown below
